• 2016 Acura RDX

We think that Acura makes some of the top SUVs for Kentucky drivers, particularly if you’re looking for a new family vehicle. After all, not only do the 2016 Acura RDX and MDX have room for friends and family, they have both earned a 2016 Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (when equipped with AcuraWatch accident prevention features).

Which of these SUVs is the right one for you? Only a test drive can say for sure, but we have a quick look at the highlights of each to help you decide which one to take for a spin when you visit a Kentucky Acura Dealer.

Top SUVs in Kentucky

The 2016 Acura RDX

While the thought of shopping for one of the top SUVs on the market might conjure images of boxy gas guzzlers, you won’t find those relics of the past in the Acura lineup. The 2016 Acura RDX is a luxury compact crossover with seating for up to five and enough options for everyone in the family to get comfortable and be entertained on a long drive.

It’s tough to list all of the things that set the RDX apart from competing crossovers, but a few highlights include:

  • Interior Luxury Features: Standard heated front seating will keep you warm through the winter, and leather upholstery is both durable and elegant. The latest in tech features can be found in the RDX—Bluetooth for phone and audio and a multi-angle rearview camera—with upgrades like navigation available as well.
  • AcuraWatch Safety Features: The RDX has the latest in AcuraWatch safety and driver assistance technologies available, including collision mitigation braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane keeping assist.
  • Power and Efficiency: Like we said, the idea of the gas-guzzling SUV is a thing of the past as far as the RDX is concerned. The 3.5L V6 engine under the hood is rated at 279 hp and 252 lb-ft of torque and is paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Each 2016 RDX FWD model earns up to an EPA-estimated 29 highway and 20 city mpg for 23 mpg combined.*

Don’t be worried about the “compact” in “compact crossover,” either; the RDX has 103.5 cubic feet of passenger space available; when you need to take Fido to the vet or have a cart full of groceries, just fold down the rear seat and expand the 26.1 cubic feet of cargo to as much as 76.9 cubic feet.

If you’re looking to upgrade beyond the standard RDX, Acura has Technology, Advance, and AcuraWatch Plus packages as well as all-wheel drive.

The 2016 Acura MDX

If your family needs something with a bit more space than the RDX, Acura has you covered. The 2016 Acura MDX is one of the few three-row luxury crossovers on the market, already setting it up to be one of the top SUVs on the market. With seating for up to seven, this Acura has room for the whole family and then some, but if you don’t need to fill all of the seats, just fold them down and make room for cargo (up to 90.9 cubic feet).

The MDX has features that should impress just as well as the RDX. Highlights of the MDX include:

  • Powertrain: Under the hood of each MDX is a 3.5L V6 engine with 290 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque, paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission and equipped with front-wheel drive (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive is available). 2016 MDX FWD models with idle stop are rated at an EPA-estimated 27 highway and 20 city mpg for 23 mpg combined.*
  • Exterior Features: The most striking exterior feature of the MDX is sure to be the Jewel Eye LED headlights. These Acura-exclusive headlights offer a crisp, clean look at what’s ahead of you while giving a distinct look to the front of your crossover. Even when the lights are off, the reflectors are designed to catch the light and give that jewel-like sparkle. Other available amenities, like roof rails and multiple different sets of alloy wheels let you set your MDX apart from the pack.
  • Interior Amenities: The interior of the MDX is draped in luxury, including standard leather upholstery and heated front seating. Tech features like Bluetooth for phone and audio let you stay connected, a standard multi-angle rearview camera offers a different look at backing up and parking, and a one-touch power moonroof lets you enjoy the fresh Kentucky air on a long drive.

We’ve just touched on the standard MDX here; Acura has multiple package upgrades to add on more high-tech amenities and even greater levels of comfort.
